Rename road

This tool changes an existing road's name, and it will change the road name of all address points with the same road name. This tool can be used when an existing road name has changed or when an incorrect road name was initially assigned.

The tool finds all instances of a RoadCenterLine segment and all address points with the original road name. The tool then prompts the user for a new road name. The tool changes the road name for all road segments and all address points to the new road name.

If your database includes duplicate road names from different municipalities, the tool updates the road name for RoadCenterLine and SiteStructureAddressPoint located within the selected municipality. For example, “Main Street Richmond Hill” and “Main Street Markham” are different roads. When you select “Main Street Richmond Hill”, only those road segments and address points within “Richmond Hill” will be updated.

• If address points do not exist for the road, use the road editor tool to change the road name.
• If address points were created for the road, use the Rename road tool.
• If you are unsure if address points exist for the road, use the Rename road tool.

Rename Road tool workflow

1. Open the Road editor.
2. Click Rename road.
3. Select a road on the map.
4. Click Search option or accept default.
   • The Search Option instructs the tool how to identify RoadCenterLine and SiteStructureAddressPoint for a given municipality.

For best results, you must ensure the Inc_Muni field on the A3Polygon and the Inc_Muni field on the SiteStructureAddressPoint match exactly, otherwise the tool will be unable to locate address points. For example, “Town of Richmond Hill” is not the same as “Richmond Hill”. Ensure the same name is used for all Inc_Muni fields for all feature types.

Spatially by: A3Polygon

The tool performs a spatial intersect to find the A3Polygon that the RoadCenterLine is located within. The municipal name is then derived from the A3Polygon (Inc_Muni) to find all SiteStructureAddressPoint features with the same road name and same municipal name (Inc_Muni).

When possible, use the Spatially by option when renaming a road and associated addresses. This option is the most reliable method for finding the proper roads and addresses to rename. However, the Inc_Muni field MUST contain the same value for the A3Polygon and all SiteStructureAddressPoint features.

• All parts of the road segment must be within the A3Polygon. The road segment must not cross an A3Polygon.
• All occurrences of the RoadCenterLine feature with the same road name and within the same A3Polygon are highlighted on the map.
• All SiteStructureAddressPoint features with the same road name and with the same municipal name from the A3Polygon are highlighted on the map.
• If an A3Polygon does not exist or crosses another A3Polygon, the tool will return and error.
• The default polygon type used for this option is set by Configurator. The default is A3Polygon.

By attribute

The tool performs an attribute search to find all RoadCenterLine and SiteStructureAddressPoint features. The field named road_jurisdiction from the selected RoadCenterLine is assumed to be the municipal name for the the RoadCenterLine. The tool then performs an attribute search for all occurrences of RoadCenterLine where the road_jurisdiction value is the same value.

A lookup is performed on the master road name table for the road name and the municipal name (value from road_jurisdiction field). An exact match will then locate all the associated SiteStructureAddressPoints. If an exact match does not exist, the tool is unable to identify the SiteStructureAddressPoints.

If the field road_jurisdiction is empty (null), the tool will be unable to determine the road name from the master road name table. Select a field which contains the proper municipal name or check that the municipal name in road_jurisdiction is correct.

If the field road_jurisdiction is not empty but a row in the master road name table does not exist for the municipal name, the tool will be unable to to determine the road name from the master road name table. Select a field which contains the proper municipal name or check that the municipal name in road_jurisdiction is correct.

This option is the least preferred method for renaming road names.

• All occurrences of the RoadCenterLine feature with the same road name and with the same municipal name (road_jurisdiction) are highlighted on the map.
• All SiteStructureAddressPoint features with the same road name and the same municipal name (Inc_Muni) are highlighted on the map.
• The default field to perform an attribute search is set by Configurator. The default is road_jurisdiction. The user can change the default by selecting the Municipality field name dropdown.
• The By attribute option may not find all occurrences of the RoadCenterLine or find all SiteStructureAddressPoint if the road_jurisdiction field is not populated with a valid municipal name or is Null.

Enter a new name for the road

1. Enter the new road name in the Rename to field.
   • The tool will search the master road name table for all occurrences of a road name containing the text you entered.
   • Only road names from the target municipality are displayed.
2. Select a new road name from the list.
   • The tool displays all RoadCenterLines and all SiteStructureAddressPoint instances in a list. These are the road centrelines and address points that will be renamed.
   • You can click the magnifying glass to zoom to a road segment to verify the changes.
   • You can hover over an address points then click the zoom to the address to verify the changes.

3. Click Reset to restart the specific step.
4. Once you have completed reviewing the changes, click Save to apply the road name change.
